(서울=포커스뉴스) 한국 속 작은 프랑스로 불리는 반포 서래마을에 위치한 서울 프랑스 학교가 한불수교 130주년을 맞아 한국인들이 프랑스 문화를 경험할 수 있도록 '프랑스 서래 프로젝트'를 진행 중이다.

쟝 이브 비쉘 서울 프랑스 학교 교장과 사뮤엘 드라브로스 학생 주임은 지난 22일 서초구 서래마을 서울 프랑스 학교 초등학교 도서관에서 포커스뉴스와 만나 '프랑스 서래 프로젝트'와 한불수교 130주년에 대해 소개했다.

비쉘 교장은 서울 프랑스 학교에 대해 "서울 프랑스 학교가 프랑스 문교부 커리큘럼을 따르고 있지만 프랑스에 있는 학교들과 동일하게 운영 하지는 않는다"면서 "서울 프랑스 학교는 두 가지 목적을 가지고 있다"고 말했다.

첫 번째 목적은 프랑스 학교를 방문국에 설립해 프랑스 학생들이 한국 문화와 언어에 친숙해 지도록 돕는 것이다. 두 번째 목적은 프랑스 문화와 교육 시스템을 국제 학교 또는 국내 학교들과 공유하는 것이다. 간단하게 설명하자면 '프랑스 서래 프로젝트'의 목표는 한불 수교 130주년을 기념하고 프랑스 학교의 두 가지 목적을 수행하기 위한 것이라고 볼 수 있다.

비쉘 교장은 "프랑스 학교 공동체가 세심한 주의를 기울이지 않으면 학교 자체가 폐쇄적이 될 수 있다"고 지적하며 이번 프로젝트의 중요성을 강조했다. 한국과 프랑스 공동체가 서로 개방하는 이런 프로젝트들이 없다면 한국에 거주하는 프랑스인 가족들은 주변의 한국 문화를 경험하지 못한 채 살게 된다는 것이다.

그는 "이 프로젝트는 사람들에게 다른 국가들의 문화를 배우고 다양한 삶의 방식을 이해하는 게 얼마나 중요한지 상기시키고 정확한 프랑스의 이미지를 한국인들에게 전달하는데 도움을 줄 것"이라고 설명했다.


'프랑스 서래 프로젝트'에 참여한 서울 프랑스 학교 학생들은 각 학년마다 다른 활동을 통해 음식, 스포츠, 게임 등 다양한 문화를 공유했다. 저학년 학생들은 파전, 크레페 등 한국과 프랑스 음식들을 요리했고, 고학년 학생들의 경우 한국 학생들을 프랑스 학교로 초청해서 씨름 등의 전통적인 스포츠와 게임을 즐겼다.

비쉘 교장은 "프랑스 학교의 또 다른 목적 중 하나는 방문국의 문화를 경험할 뿐 아니라 지역 공동체에 그 문화를 도입하는 것"이라며 "서래마을에 거주하는 프랑스인 공동체의 이미지를 바꾸기 위해 노력하고 있다"고 말했다. 서래마을 내 프랑스인 공동체는 한국인들과 분리되어 살아가는 프랑스인들의 폐쇄적인 집단이 아니라 좀 더 활발하게 상호작용하고 서로 참여하는 공동체라는 것이다.

이는 한국 내 프랑스 공동체가 다른 도시에 퍼져있는 '차이나타운'이나 '리틀 인디아' 등과 차별화되는 부분이기도 하다. 그는 "'차이나타운'이나 '리틀 인디아' 같은 곳들을 자세히 보면 사람들이 현지인들과 약간 고립되어 살아가고 있다"면서 "우리는 한국인들과 함께 프랑스식 삶의 방식을 나누고 싶다. '우리끼리'가 아니라 다른 이들과 '함께 하는' 삶을 추구한다"고 강조했다.

한편 서울 프랑스 학교 학생들은 프랑스 문화의 상징물들을 보여주기 위해 프랑스 유명인들의 이름을 새긴 20개의 도로 현판을 제작하는 일에 참여했다. 또한 올해 9월부터 지역 주민들의 도움을 받아 400개의 파랑색, 흰색, 빨간색 타일도 제작할 계획이다. 이는 태극기와 프랑스 국기의 공통 색이기도 하다. 이 타일들은 은행 나무 공원 내 나무들 밑에 전시해서 누구나 와서 볼 수 있도록 할 계획이다.

비쉘 교장은 "오는 28일 오후 2시30분 서울 프랑스 학교에서 도로 현판 제막식을 거행한다"면서 "주한 프랑스 대사와 한국 관계자들도 참석할 예정"이라고 말했다. 그는 "'프랑스 서래 프로젝트'를 위해 시간과 노력을 들여 헌신한 서울 프랑스 학교 학생들은 이 행사가 오랫동안 기억되기를 희망한다"면서 "한불 관계의 발전에 더욱 많은 사람들이 관심을 가졌으면 좋겠다"고 덧붙였다.

'프랑스 서래 프로젝트'의 진정한 목적은 양국의 풍부한 문화를 진지하게 공유해야 하는 중요성은 알리면서도 양국의 전통은 더욱 잊지 말고 지키자는 메시지를 전하는데 있을 것이다.

Sorae-Maeul, Striving for a New Image

To celebrate the 130th anniversary of the relationship between France and South Korea, the LFS (Lycee Francais de Seoul) , a French school located in the Sorae-Maeul district, created a project called the 'LFS France-Sorae Project' in order to allow Koreans to experience French culture. On June 22, 2016, Focus News interviewed the headmaster of LFS , Mr. Jean-Yves Bichel, and the dean of students, Mr. Samuel Delabrosse. The interview was held at the school in the elementary school library. In our discussion, they shared their ideas regarding the 'LFS France-Sorae Project' and their views on the bilateral relationship between France and South Korea.

First, we asked the headmaster to introduce the French school to us. He said that although the school follows a French curriculum, it is not identical to French schools in France. He stated that the LFS has two missions. The first one is to open the school to the host country and help the students become familiar with Korean culture and language. The second mission is to share the French culture and education with other international or local schools. The purpose of the 'France-Sorae Project' is quite simply to carry out both missions and to mark the 130th anniversary between the two countries, aims that were both timely and important to the school community. Mr. Bichel mentioned that, if the school community was not cautious, it could easily be closed within the school and, without projects like these where both communities open up to each other, the French families would just be living in Korea without experiencing their surroundings. Thus, this project will remind people of the importance of getting to know the culture and different ways of life of other countries, and it will also help set a precise image of France to Koreans.

We asked our interviewees what specific activities LFS students have been participating in for the 'LFS France-Sorae Project'. Their response was that each grade did something different. The younger students took part in cooking similar dishes from both countries, one example being pa-jeon from Korea and crepes from France. The older students invited Korean students to the school and shared traditional sports and games, such as wrestling. Our guests were asked what the role of the LFS was and how the French community in Korea was similar or different from places such as 'Chinatown' or 'Little India' in other cities. The headmaster said that other one of the French school's mission is to see what the host country has to offer but also what it can bring to the local community. He also added that they are trying to change the image of the French community in Sorae-Maeul from being a closed group of French people isolated from the local community to a community more interactive and involved. He said that when we take a closer look at places like 'Chinatown' or 'Little India', people are living in sort of little isolated 'ghettos'. "We want to live the French way of life along with Korean people, not just between ourselves but with the others" said Mr. Bichel.

The LFS students also participated in creating 20 street plates with the names of 10 Frenchmen and women in order to show the symbols of French culture. Starting in September of 2016, the students, with the help of locals, will create 400 blue, white, and red tiles, the colors the Korean and the French flags share. These tiles will be displayed in the Ginko Park under the trees for anyone to come and explore. There will be an inaugural ceremony regarding the street plates on June 28,2016, at 2:30pm at the LFS, whose purpose, Mr. Bichel explained, was to make the project more official. The French ambassador to Korea as well as many Korean authorities will be attending and speeches will be given by them on this occasion.

The LFS students, who have contributed lots of hard work, dedication, and time into this project hope that the 'LFS France-Sorae Project' will be remebered for a long time and that the relationship between France and Korea will stand out and seize many people's interests. These activities aim to promote more mindfulness of the importance and the seriousness of sharing our rich cultures with one another and not forget but keep this tradition.
